LECTURE-Myles Lucas

Myles came in to share his experiences working on an internship.

His first piece of work experience after graduation was at studio called Peloton which paid half for his salary as well as the university itself.

He didn’t have much experience at all to begin with, but he did know how to show enthusiasm and be friendly with workers. It’s a good method if you want to get proper tips and education from professionals.

Because of his personality, the studio saw him as a useful asset. He got recommended to another studio for further education.

Jumping from studio to studio, he took in all the individual traits and work ethics from said studios to improve his skillset as a graphic designer.

Myles eventually got to Brighton, filling a gap at Studio Makgill which turned out to be his best internship yet. Lasting from 2010 to 2012, and eventually a full time junior job.

One of the more time consuming pieces of work he got to do was the branding for BoxPark, a series of popular street food centres. Quite impressive regarding that there were only two other colleagues working in the studio, but offered a lot of experience non the less.

He felt it was time to try a recruitment agency. Doing so would get him a job with DN&CO for a couple of years.

His confidence begins to build more at his time there, working on branding for broadcasting in Olympic Park, launching at the South x Southwest Festival.

It was now time to start his own studio.

Working with previous clients on the side, Myles built his own client base at Myles Lucas Studio. He even included a bit of in house freelance work here and there including a theatre company.

From what I learned in the lecture its important to prioritise different areas of work experience, and while I am not a graphic designer. It would be handy in getting used to a working environment I would otherwise feel intimidated by.

Myles tips were to be wary of places that want you for free as they may not seem reliable for info or work they are offering, especially if they are not paying you to do so.

Another thing is to have a healthy attitude when approaching these opportunities as social interaction can earn the favour and respect in the companies eyes. This can come back later if you are looking for work and they call back because of the good relationship you’ve built.
