So to narrow it down to what book I want to adapt, I want to consider which were my favourites and what I can see as an ideal film/TV series.
GOOSEBUMPS is a series of horror/comedy novellas written by R.L. Stine. They have been adapted time and time again due to popularity, from a TV show, to video games to even a film already. This particular novella I like is set in a theme park called horrorland, the main characters family decides to go as an alternative when they get lost. Little do they know however, that this theme park of monsters is a literal tourist trap for humans, and the costumed monsters are in fact real.
As much as I like this book series it has seen many adaptations already, so I can't really imagine doing something new with it.
BABOON by David Jones is the thrilling yet intriguing journey of a young teenage boy who upon crash landing with his parents in Tanzania, East Africa, wakes up in the body of a baboon and must find a way of surviving in the savannah. He must overcome predators, live in a troop of baboons and adapt to their way of living.
I remember being really sucked in by the information the lead character learnt about these animals and how he thought being in these dangerous/foreign scenarios. It's kind of like a backwards fish out of water style story with an under-represented african mammal. I can see both angles of action packed thrill, some humorous moments and thought provoking narration from the lead's perspective.
This is a very high consideration.
CHARLIE AND THE GREAT GLASS ELEVATOR is the lesser known sequel to Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and is equally rife with imaginative scenerios. A space hotel, morphing aliens, a piece of candy that reverses your age etc.
It's almost reactionary to the first Moon launch and landing during the 60's and 70's. I can imagine going a new route with a sci fi pulp comic design reminiscent of the time and seperating it from other charlie and the chocolate factory adaptations. I honestly felt it deserved the limelight when I was young. I will keep this at the back of my head.
ALICE IN WONDERLAND
Need I say more. I like the book so much but its probably had the most film versions imaginable. What can I do to seperate it. Everyone has done their take own of it. I would rather go with something less known, thank you.
MAGICIANS NEPHEW
A prequel book by C.S. Lewis in the chronicles of Narnia series. A good book but doesn't strike up title sequence possibilities in my head. I can only imagine up something involving a house setting which isn't very exciting. A lot happens, but I would only want to keep it secret from the audience.
COMPLETE NONSENSE
A compilation of stories and rhymes by Edward Lear. Not exactly something to adapt on screen as it would be very disjointed. This is a strong no from me.
So far the only two I am considering are Baboon and Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator.
I will investigate further with research.
