I have decided on a little experiment of making the baboon face asset with the photo as a potential template. I've drawn on a new layer in illustrator to used the eraser to make contours/highlights. I like the image albeit its a bit wonky/artificial. Maybe I could try something else later.
SALLY CRUIKSHANK
Ever since watching that Madhouse title I decided to look up the creator of the sequence herself, Sally Cruikshank.
Born 1949, she is known for surrealistic, psychedelic cartoon and illustration work. She was one of many animators for segments on the hit childrens series Sesame street. Other projects she has worked on for companies include the title sequence for the cult 80's film Mannequin and an cartoon horror sequence in the film adaptation of the Twilight Zone.

Her style is very unique and colourful, it seems to be a strange fusion of two styles, 1930s cartoons and 1970s psychedelia, I have never seen anything like it. And like I may have mentioned when looking at her title sequence, I see some african influences as well, from the patterns colours and thick lines used.
My favourite thing I have checked out on her youtube page is a delightfully dream-like short called Face like a Frog. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4unyZNh84M
It just has that feeling of complete madness, yet a calming and relaxed.
Like being pleased by discomfort.
I think I may only take slight influence. Not too crazy but something more bold and colourful would help the sequence more.
