Charlie and the great glass elevators plot is very representive of the nonsense sci fi plots and ideas that boomed in reaction to the first rocket launch and moon landing. The book was published in 1972 after all.
I think I would like to explore that sci fi pulp genre of art to visualise the narrative/concept of the book in the span of a few minutes or less.
ART of the Title Influences and Sources
I decided seeing as saul bass was a large reflection of 60’s/70’s style title sequences, I quite preferred the it’s a mad mad world one as it features small cartoony characters in contrast with the globe. Its comical and it’s a nice contrast to show off saul basses experience in designing logos.
Baboon is set in Tanzania-Africa. The main character Gerry is returning to a research camp for baboons with his parents who are working there. The plane they take is a skyvan, which is key to something I have in mind of the title sequence.
It crash lands and Gerry has waken up to find he is not himself.
He has transformed into a baboon And must now find a way to survive in a baboon troop as well as avoid predators and find a way back to his own body.
Predators:
Leopard
Lion
Baboon
Prey:
Gazelle
Ants
I think with a gritty animal survival story in the savannah I want to go with something action oriented and fast paced.
I was thinking of making a callback to saul bass with influence from the incredibles title sequence, as it does feature a jungle-ish setting and plains. And the simple shapes and silhouettes help the colours contrast to bombastic-yet stylish effect.
I like the idea of the opening with the face in vertigo. I think it would make a great striking image to have the title over the image of the baboons face. It gives a strong physcological vibe.
I like the tone achieved in this B-Movie classic. Attack of the crab monsters, its use of large expansive illustrations give the feeling of mystery/discovery while the music suggests terror/panic.
I love the bold lines and colours. I think that’s exactly what I want for the sequence. Bold colours that compliment and set the African setting in a bold, bombastic yet child friendly way. Albiet not as cartoony as this intro suggests.
I am officially setting my mark on Baboon as the title sequence! I need something more colourful to produce, something more active and thrilling would be my cup of tea. Previous projects have been more dark and brooding and I want to bring out more lightness for this project.
