Updated: Mar 8, 2019

NAME: William Hanekom

PROJECT TITLE: What's the time? (Working Title)

THE SUBJECT OF YOUR INVESTIGATION AND WHAT YOU WISH TO COMMUNICATE:

1.The effects of childhood trauma on the rest of your life, how what we see and view at an early age may continue effecting you for the rest of your life.

DESCRIBE THE FORMAT/PROCESS FOR YOUR PROJECT:

(Method of working, how many images will we see?)

Film-making, live action and animation.

WHO IS YOUR AUDIENCE?

(Age, sex, general, etc)

Teens to adults

DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

(What do you hope to learn? How are you extending or challenging your thinking and working methods?)

I want to make a project that reflects the Personal fears I inherited as a child, while not directly referencing it, it should be designed and reminiscent of them. Uncanny puppet/dolls, strange sounds and a feeling of tension. Essentially surreal horror under the appearance of a low budget childrens show.

I hope to improve my digital Editing and effects skills as well as learning more practical elements such as prop making and puppetry.

DESCRIBE WHAT WILL WE SEE AT THE FINAL CRIT:

A horror/comedy narrative inspired by personal childhood fears of mine, how they persisted into my adult life and how I came to deal with this.

The protagonist and show will be fictionalised with artistic liberties. The main presentation is a short film transitioning the world of the show and the world of the lead character.

3 children journey out from their house into the forest. Two of them are fairly confident, whilst the third feels uneasy. It is there that they encounter a wolf, Mr Wolf to be correct. This is combination of the Red Riding hood narrative and the children’s game What’s the time Mr Wolf?

The naive children agree to play the game as the wolf rolls its eyes and announces the time in a creepy, suspicious fashion. When it officially comes to dinnertime the children run as the wolf pursues them, and we suddenly start to cross over into the other reality as the tension builds. The fake forest becomes real, the first two are taken by the wolf, and the third becomes an adult human running as fast he could as whatever pursues closes in on him.

He eventually escapes into in his own reality, safe from the once lurking threat. But the fear still sticks with him as our film ends on ambiguously dark tone.

The other pieces can be props from the film and a log/sketchbook of the protagonist remembering the show and how badly it used to effect him. In all honesty I haven’t gotten that far in terms of other ideas, but the film is the main one.
